PRICKIMAGE vs MURPHY

For Kinetica Art Fair ’10 and the unique Musion Eyeliner 3D holographic projection system Cybersonica have selected a line up of exceptional audiovisual talent drawn from previous Cybersonica Socials – our irregular live showcase – and AV Lab ’08 – our week-long residential creative & practical workshop.

The Kinetica Art Fair provides collectors, curators, museums and the public with a unique opportunity to view and purchase artworks from leading international galleries, artist’s collectives, curatorial groups and organisations specialising in kinetic, electronic and new media art. Kinetica’s aim through the fair is to popularise artists and organisations working in these genres and to provide a new platform for the commercial enterprise of this field. Alongside the fair there will be special events, screenings, tours, talks, workshops and performances. These events will involve some of the world’s most eminent leaders in the fields of kinetic, electronic and new media art.

An annual celebration of electronic music, sonic art and audiovisual experimentation, Cybersonica is a key destination for anyone interested in the theory and practice of how new technologies are shaping and changing the way musicians, digital artists, audiovisualisers and creative software developers make and present their work. Now in its eighth year, its rolling programme of collaborative events and projects brings together a vibrant community of sonic and audiovisual innovation, nurtures new talent and showcases the freshest and latest work in the field.

Cybersonica have been regular collaborators with Kinetica Museum since the co-curated SoundWaves sonic art exhibition in 2007.

Widely recognised as pioneers of VJ culture, D-Fuse are a group of London based artists founded in the mid 90’s by Michael Faulkner who explore a range of creative media – from art, architecture, photography and film to live AV performances.

Scanone creates intelligent and sharp beat structures reinforced with heavy bass, emotive synth lines and sci-fi fx… a sound that borders a myriad of underground genres. His work has featured on numerous short films, animated sequences, TV adverts, soundtracks, scores and live performance for events.

Voice controller Kristi delivers edgy electronic grooves and live, gutsy vocal FX merged with the evolving and surrealist imagery of Oddscene .

PRICKIMAGE vs MURPHY is a fresh collaboration fusing the the kinetic and potent visuals of moving image artist Barry Gene Murphy with the irreverent, full of fantasy, humor and intrigue visuals of Prickimage .

Threep & Vent Media
VC Kristi & Oddscene
Steve Nosurname & Barry Gene Murphy

kaf_info_exhibitors_500px1

Cybersonica Social creates a little slice of Cybersonica – London’s annual celebration of music, sound, art and technology – for a brief but enjoyable two hours this Sunday evening at the Kinetica Art Fair.

The seventh in a now somewhat irregular night, the evening features a select line-up of new and previously featured talent including the idiosyncratic granular textures and analogue rhythms of Threep accompanied by the minimalist visual waveforms of Vent Media; the edgy electronic grooves and live, gutsy vocal FX of VC Kristi with the evolving and surrealist imagery of Oddscene; and the old-skool electro to 8-bit freakouts to drum n’ bass mentalism of Steve Nosurname with the kinetic and potent visuals of moving image artist Barry Gene Murphy.

Kinetica Art Fair, the UK’s first art fair dedicated to kinetic, robotic, sound, light and time-based art opens in London on Friday 27 February – and carnivorous art, man-animal-machine hybrids, mechanical drawing machines, subliminal installations, pole dancing robots, light sculptures and cybernetics are just some of the exhibits to be found there – providing unparalleled opportunities for the public and collectors alike to view and buy work from this thriving international movement and to participate in the programme of talks, workshops and performances.

Longtime Kinetica Museum collaborators, Cybersonica’s contribution to the Art Fair showcases established names and emerging talent who make their own music or audiovisual work using inventive technologies and then perform it live (as opposed to just pressing play in Ableton Live). We strongly recommend progressive electronic music makers, audiovisualisers, digital artists and fans looking for somewhere to meet like-minded people, share ideas and enjoy fresh, vibrant music and performance to come along and check it all out.

Our second Social of the season is part of the London Games Fringe – a festival of alternative gaming events at the end of October 2008, organised by artists, academics, gamers, game developers, educators and creative professionals from a wide range of different media – and includes grass root musicians and music makers “who are dedicated to the appreciation and reinterpretation of video game music“; 8-bit music makers or ‘chip tuners’ who use the same sound chips as the original games consoles; various digital artists whose work explores alternative gaming experiences and the boundaries between gaming and art; and short film-makers and animators from around the world that draw from and are inspired by video game culture.

‘The Sound Of Games’ features: live performances and DJ sets from 8-bit music makers gwEm vs Counter Reset & Random and Game Boy DJ Jellica of the Kittenrock label (streamed live from his studio in Cambridge); a live ‘remote’ performance of Arcangel Contantini’s interactive online animation project bakteria.org (controlled by Arcangel from Mexico City); an exhibition of Stanza’s soundtoys.net project – a repository of exciting new works by a growing community of audio visual artists; interactive playful works from digital artists Nipplecat and Julian Baker with Adam Hoyle; as well as screenings of innovative short films and animations. More details on the 12th November line-up and a selection of live mixes from past events can be found at the Cybersonica Social website .

With live music and audiovisual performances, screenings of short music films and promos, DJ and VJ sets, playful interactive audiovisual artworks and demonstrations of creative work and techniques from established names and emerging talent Cybersonica Social is our ‘hang-out’ for progressive electronic music makers, audiovisualisers, digital artists and fans looking for somewhere to meet like-minded people, share ideas and enjoy fresh, vibrant music and performance.

Cybersonica Social (formerly known as Çonic Social) relaunches after a summer break and at a new venue – The Flea-Pit <http://thefleapit.com> – a cafe-bar on Columbia Rd right next to the park and a place where art and socialising go hand in hand… “A perfect pit-stop” says Wallpaper Magazine 2006 (London’s Best New Destinations).

Cybersonica Social creates a slice of Cybersonica for a few brief but enjoyable hours once a month in the friendly, vibey surroundings of the The Flea-Pit – and takes a new approach – themes. Each month investigates a different strand of work associated with Cybersonica with line-ups to suit. We kick off with an exploration into 3D sound and visuals – installing the Illustrious 3D-AudioScape surround system to deliver ‘ultra real’ three dimensional audio.

‘In 3 Dimensions’ features a set of 3D music by Martyn Ware of Illustrious – 80s pop icon and co-founder of The Human League and Heaven 17 – with live visuals by Fat Butcher; a screening of the D-Fuse & Illustrious 2007 FPS–A LONDON CONVERSATION – a commission for the opening of the new BFI building; a range of work from squidsoup including Driftnet – a spatialised musical environment navigated by bird-like flight; Daniel Jones‘ AtomSwarm – a three dimensional sonic ecosystem; and screenings of works from The Sancho Plan, Tal Rosner and the D-Fuse ‘VJ Culture’ book DVD.

This will be the fifth in a regular monthly night hosted by Cybersonica – London’s annual celebration of music, sound, art and technology. Future themes include November’s ‘The Sound Of Games’ a tie in with the London Games Fringe and December’s not too unexpected “Xmas Party’.

If you make your own music or audiovisual work with interesting technology, are keen to play your music live (as opposed to just pressing play in Ableton Live) and would like to perform at Cybersonica Social then we’d like to hear from you. Contact us at <social [AT] cybersonica.org> with some personal info and links to your music, videos and images and we’ll check it out and get back to you.
